Firmin Rankin, OFM
1924 – 1991
Fr. Firmin Rankin, OFM, was born April 7, 1924 in New York City. He entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1947, professing temporary vows one year later. He made his solemn profession in 1951 and was ordained in 1953.
The first 25 years of his priesthood were spent at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in New York City, where he was a kind confessor and patient listener. For three years, Fr. Firmin was resident chaplain at Frances Schervier Home and Hospital in the Bronx, N.Y. When his health began to decline, he resided at Sacred Heart Friary in East Rutherford, N.J. He touched the lives of many who had been rejected, alienated or hurt by family, clergy or society.
He died on April 17, 1991 at Holy Name Friary, Ringwood, N.J. Fr. Firmin was 67 years old, a professed friar for 42 years and a priest for 37 years.
