Fr. Finbar Dowd, OFM, was born on Aug. 3, 1915 in New York City. He was received into the novitiate at St. Bonaventure in Paterson, N.J., in 1936, professing temporary vows one year later. He made his solemn profession in 1940 and was ordained in 1942.

He ministered at St. Bonaventure University, Allegany, N.Y., and at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in New York City. Fr. Finbar also served as chaplain in the United States Navy.

He died on Oct. 27, 1970. Fr. Finbar was 55 years old, a professed friar for 33 years, and a priest for 28 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
