Fidelis Reynolds

1873 – 1937

Fr. Fidelis Reynolds, OFM, was born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, N.Y., on Nov. 8, 1873. After practicing law for some years, he entered the novitiate of the Franciscans in Teutopolis, Ill., on July 25, 1901. He professed temporary vows July 29, 1902, and made his profession of solemn vows Aug. 12, 1905. Fr. Fidelis was ordained a priest in Newark, N.J., as a member of Holy Name Province on June 4, 1906.

He taught at St. Bonaventure College, and succeeded Fr. Joseph Butler, OFM, as ninth president of the college in 1911. He served as president for five years.

As guardian in Allegany, vice-commissary of the Holy Land, councilor of Holy Name Province, guardian at Holy Cross Church in Clason Point, N.Y., and gifted preacher of retreats and missions, Fr. Fidelis served the Province faithfully until his death in St. Francis Hospital, Miami Beach, Fla., on May 26, 1937. He was 63 years old, a professed friar for 34 years and a priest for nearly 31 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
