Fidelis Kircher

1841 – 1903

Fr. Fidelis Kircher, OFM, was born on Aug. 30, 1841 in Huenfeld, Germany. He entered the Order in 1863 in Germany, professing temporary vows one year later. Fr. Fidelis made his solemn profession in 1867 and was ordained in 1868.

He left Germany during the Kulturkampf in 1875 and came to America. He was among the pioneer friars who labored at St. Stephen Friary in Croghan, N.Y. Fr. Fidelis was the first pastor at St. Mary’s Parish in Obernburg, N.Y., and he spent several years in Denver and Paterson, N.J.

He died on Feb. 10, 1903 in Paterson. Fr. Fidelis was 61 years old, a professed friar for 38 years and a priest for 34 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
