Fernando Vasquez, OFM

1945 – 1982

Fr. Fernando Vasquez, OFM, was born on May 31, 1945 in Cochabamba, Bolivia. He felt called to the diocesan priesthood and studied at the major seminary of the Diocese of Cochabamba. During a summer vacation in the friars’ parish in Alto, La Paz, he asked to enter the Order. Fr. Fernando received the habit in 1972, professing temporary vows one year later. He made his solemn profession and was ordained in 1976.

In 1978, Fr. Fernando was appointed pastor and guardian at Caranavi. His brief priestly ministry was to the poor of his vast parish. He regularly visited more than 300 small communities.

He died on March 16, 1982 in the San Pedro Clinic in Cochabamba. Fr. Fernando was 36 years old, a professed friar for nine years and a priest for five years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
