Ernest Guerrera

1906 – 1975

Br. Ernest Guerra, OFM, was born on June 23, 1906 in Pontelandolfo, Italy. When he was eight years old, his family came to America, settling in Waterbury, Conn. At age 25, he became a tertiary brother in Paterson, N.J. in 1932. Br. Ernest was received into the First Order in 1934, professing temporary vows one year later and making his solemn profession in 1938.

The greater part of his life as a friar was spent serving the communities at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., and St. Francis Friary, New York City. For 28 years, he was responsible for the laundry in Paterson, and for 10 years, he served as guest master at the Provincial House in New York City.

He died on Jan. 14, 1975 in Paterson. Br. Ernest was 69 years old, a professed friar for 39 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
