Elmer Nichols

1904 – 1939

Fr. Elmer Nichols, OFM, was born on Nov. 17, 1904 in Philadelphia. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y., and entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1924, professing temporary vows one year later. He was a member of the first class to enter Holy Name College, Washington. Fr. Elmer made his solemn profession in 1929 and was ordained in 1931.

He served the Province faithfully as a confessor at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, New York City, a professor at the Callicoon seminary and an assistant at St. Elizabeth Parish, Denver. He died on March 26, 1939 at St. Francis Hospital in the Bronx, N.Y. Fr. Elmer was 34 years old, a professed friar for 13 years and a priest for seven years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
