Edward J. Burke, OFM
1927 – 2007
Fr. Edward Burke, OFM, was born on Nov. 6, 1927 in Philadelphia. After serving in the military, he studied at St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y. In 1955, he was received into the novitiate at St. Raphael Friary, Lafayette, N.J., professing temporary vows one year later. He made his solemn profession in 1959 and was ordained in 1962.
From 1963 to 1970, Fr. Edward served as parish administrator and procurator of the Province’s mission in Bolivia. From 1970 to 1973, he served as parochial vicar at Holy Cross Parish in the Bronx, N.Y. In 1973, he became chaplain at the veteran administration hospital in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Fr. Edward moved back to Callicoon in 1973, serving as pastor of Holy Cross Parish for two years. He resided at St. Anthony Friary, Butler, N.J., from 1995 to 1996 before transferring to St. Anthony Friary, St. Petersburg, Fla. In 2001, he moved to Holy Name Friary, Ringwood, N.J.
He died there on Feb. 26, 2007. Fr. Edward was 79 years old, a professed friar for 50 years and a priest for 44 years.
