Fr. Dominic Scanlan, OFM, was born on Feb. 3, 1866 in Philadelphia. He entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure College in Allegany, N.Y., in 1884, professing temporary vows one year later. He made his solemn profession in 1888 and was ordained in 1889.

An eloquent orator and preacher, Fr. Dominic spent the greater part of his life preaching parish missions and retreats as a member of the early Mission Band. He was among the first four members of the Provincial Council when Holy Name Province was established.

He died on Dec. 19, 1911 in Newark, N.J. Fr. Dominic was 45 years old, a professed friar for 26 years and a priest for 22 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
