Conald Boland

1915 – 1966

Fr. Conald Boland, OFM, was born in Dorchester, Mass., on June 6, 1915. He entered the Province’s novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J., Aug. 12, 1940, and professed temporary vows Aug. 13, 1941.

Fr. Conald made his profession of solemn vows Sept. 17, 1944, and was ordained a priest June 9, 1946.

He served at St. Anthony Shrine in Boston for two years, before going to Brazil as a missionary. Poor health forced his return to Boston in 1952. Fr. Conald was one of the founding friars of Our Lady’s Chapel in New Bedford, Mass., in 1956, and he was appointed its vicar in 1964.

Fr. Conald bore illness and suffering with great patience and was a quiet, wise friar among the people and his fellow friars. He died in the Pratt Diagnostic Institute in Boston on July 6, 1966. He was 51 years old, a professed friar for 24 years and a priest for 20 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
