Fr. Carmel Lluria, OFM, was born on Oct. 31, 1927 in Varadero, Cuba, and baptized José. He was received into the Order in 1949, professing temporary vows one year later. Fr. Carmel made his solemn profession in 1953 and was ordained in 1955.

Shortly after his ordination, Fr. Carmel was diagnosed with a serious mental illness and spent most of his life in various health care facilities. In 1997, he was moved to Preakness Health Care Center in Paterson, N.J., where he died on Feb. 26, 2007. Fr. Carmel was 79 years old, a professed friar for 56 years and a priest for 51 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
