Callistus Smith

1903 – 1974

Fr. Callistus Smith, OFM, was born on Oct. 12, 1903 in Askam, Pa. He was received into the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1922, professing temporary vows one year later. Fr. Callistus made his solemn profession in 1926 and was ordained in 1929.

He taught as a professor of canon law and moral theology at Christ the King Seminary, Allegany, N.Y., from 1933 to 1964. In this field, his influence was nationwide, especially through his revised text of the Commentary on the Code of Canon Law. Fr. Callistus served as secretary of Holy Name Province, as a Provincial Councilor, and as Provincial Vicar. He had a profound personal influence on the multitude of seminarians that he taught, and his former students continued to seek his counsel during their priesthoods.

He died on Jan. 3, 1974 in Paterson, N.J. Fr. Callistus was 70 years old, a professed friar for 50 years and a priest for 44 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
