1899 – 1969

Br. Cajetan Baumann, OFM, was born in Gruenkraut, Germany, on Aug. 3, 1899. He was received into the novitiate in Gorheim, Germany, and professed temporary vows July 16, 1923. He came to the United States in 1925, and made his solemn profession in Paterson, N.J., on July 16, 1926.

Br. Cajetan was a skilled wood-carver and cabinet-maker, and worked in Paterson for 10 years. He went to St. Bonaventure College in Allegany, N.Y., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 1941, and went on to Columbia University for his Master of Science. He also possessed the National Council Certificate, which qualified him as an architect in all states.

Throughout his architectural career, Br. Cajetan designed the structures of churches, convents, schools, college residences, retreat houses and seminaries. He was a mild man with an old-world graciousness and courtesy, and a quiet friar of great simplicity who lived at St. Francis Friary in New York City. He was the American representative on the International Commission for the Restoration of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem.

Br. Cajetan was a simple friar and a world-renown distinguished architect and member of the Fulda Province until his death. He died at University Hospital in New York City on May 9, 1969. He was 69 years old, and a professed friar for 45 years.
