Bruno Joyal

1887 – 1971

Br. Bruno Joyal, OFM, was born Nov. 6, 1887 in Woonsocket, R.I. He was received into the novitiate in 1924, professing temporary vows one year later. Br. Bruno made his solemn profession in 1928.

He was one of the most widely known and beloved friars in Holy Name Province and lived his entire Franciscan life in Callicoon, N.Y., except for his postulancy and novitiate. At St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, he spent more than 40 years praying and working — caring for the boilers, the seminary grounds and the friars’ cemetery, where he is now buried. His special ministry was that of friendship and hospitality, which he offered to the many visitors, summer tourists and seminarians. He was the “Brother Juniper” of Sullivan County and Holy Name Province until his death.

He died on Feb. 7, 1971 in Port Jervis, N.Y. Br. Bruno was 83 years old, a professed friar for 45 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
