Brendan Lyons

1893 – 1946

Fr. Brendan Lyons, OFM, was born in Loughrea, County Galway, Ireland, on April 15, 1893. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y., and entered the Province’s novitiate in 1916 at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J.

He professed his temporary vows in 1917 and made his profession of solemn vows in 1920. In 1923, Fr. Brendan was ordained a priest in Buffalo, N.Y.

Fr. Brendan served as provincial procurator of the Franciscan Missionary Union for several years, before being appointed pastor of St. Bonaventure in Paterson and also of St. Leo in Elmwood Park, N.J.

For eight years, he preached missions and retreats as a member of the Province’s Mission Band. Fr. Brendan also served as pastor of St. Anthony in Asheville, N.C.

He died in St. Clare’s Hospital in New York City on Aug. 24, 1946. Fr. Brendan was 53 years old, a professed friar for 29 years and a priest for 23 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
