Boniface Sutter

1905 – 1965

Br. Boniface Sutter, OFM, was born in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, on Dec. 1, 1905. He became a Tertiary Brother in Fulda at the age of 18. He was received into the novitiate in Fulda July 30, 1927, and professed temporary vows on Aug. 1, 1928. In 1929, Br. Boniface responded to a call for volunteers from Fr. Mathias Faust, OFM.

He came to Holy Name Province and professed his solemn vows in Butler, N.J., on Aug. 18, 1931. He became a full member of Holy Name Province Oct. 5, 1954. Br. Boniface was a master craftsman as a bookbinder in Paterson from 1931 to 1955.

In 1956, he went to St. Stephen Friary, Croghan, N.Y., to instruct young candidates and tertiaries in the Brothers’ Training Program. He died in St. Clare’s Hospital in New York City on May 9, 1965. He was 59 years old and a professed friar for 36 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
