Bonaventure McIntyre

1893 – 1967

Fr. Bonaventure McIntyre, OFM, was born Dec. 8, 1893 in Philadelphia. He attended both the high school and college departments of St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y. He entered the novitiate in 1910, professing temporary vows one year later. Fr. Bonaventure made his solemn profession in 1914 and was ordained in 1917.

He began teaching at St. Bonaventure University, Allegany, N.Y., and in 1921, was assigned to the Province’s Mission Band. Fr. Bonaventure served as pastor of St. Bonaventure Parish, Allegany, N.Y., and built the church and school there. He was pastor of parishes in Beach Haven, Butler and Garfield, N.J., and Winsted, Conn. Fr. Bonaventure served as a Provincial Councilor for five years and was Custos from 1945 to 1949. His final years of ministry were spent at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in New York City.

He died on Jan. 25, 1967 in Paterson, N.J. Fr. Bonaventure was 73 years old, a professed friar for 55 years and a priest for nearly 50 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
