Bertrand Carrigan

1904 – 1971

Br. Bertrand Carrigan, OFM, was born on Dec. 21, 1904 in Gloucester, Mass. After 14 years of civilian work, he was received as a tertiary brother in 1937 at St. Francis Friary in New York City. He was received into the First Order in 1939, professing temporary vows one year later. Br. Bertrand made his solemn profession in 1943.

After serving as porter at St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y., and refectorian in the Bronx, N.Y., he was assigned to St. Francis Friary, Brookline, Mass., where he served as refectorian from 1953 to 1965. Br. Bertrand’s final assignment was to Siena College, Loudonville, N.Y., where he worked as sacristan until his death.

He died there on Jan. 18, 1971. Fr. Bertrand was 66 years old, a professed friar for 30 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
