Bertin O'Neill, OFM

1906 – 1970
Fr. Bertin O’Neill, OFM, was born on Jan. 17, 1906, in Philadelphia. After graduating from St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y., he entered the Province’s novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J., Aug. 4, 1925.
He professed temporary vows on Aug. 5, 1926, and made his profession of solemn vows Aug. 5, 1929. Fr. Bertin was ordained a priest June 14, 1932.
Fr. Bertin spent his early years in parochial ministry at St. Stephen’s in Croghan, N.Y., St. Mary’s in Pompton Lakes, N.J., St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, N.Y., and St. Elizabeth’s in Denver.
In 1942, he was assigned to St. Francis of Assisi Church on 31st Street in New York City, where he remained until his death. He also served as chaplain at St. Clare Annex and St. Elizabeth Hospital.
Fr. Bertin experienced much physical suffering during his life and accepted his pain with patience. He was a compassionate friar with the sick to whom he ministered.
He died at St. Elizabeth Hospital in New York City on July 20, 1970. He was 64 years old, 43 years a professed friar and a priest for 38 years.
