Deceased Friars
Bernardine Kohn, OFM

1900 – 1972
Br. Bernardine Kohn, OFM, was born on Nov. 14, 1900 in Wasserbilig, Luxemburg. He was received into the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1925, professing temporary vows one year later. Br. Bernardine made his solemn profession in 1930.
He served the Province well, caring for the friary and gardens in Croghan and Callicoon, N.Y., for most of his Franciscan life. Br. Bernardine enjoyed his garden work, and much of the beauty of the grounds in Croghan and Callicoon are due to the meticulous care he provided. A gentle friar, he spent a great deal of time in private prayer. He also served as a maintenance and boiler man for the friars.
He died on March 28, 1972 at the Provincial infirmary at St. Bonaventure University, Allegany, N.Y. Br. Bernardine was 71 years old, a professed friar for 45 years.
