Br. Bentivolius Lotz, OFM, was born April 14, 1886 in Offenbach, Germany. He was received as a tertiary brother in Fulda in 1906 and came to America in 1909. Br. Bentivolius entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1910, professing temporary vows one year later. He made his solemn profession in 1917.

For 40 years, he served at ministries in Paterson, N.J., and Croghan, N.Y., and New York City as tailor, barber and handyman. He was greatly appreciated at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in New York City for the hospitality and care that he provided traveling friars.

He died on Feb. 6, 1950 at St. Clare’s Hospital in New York City. Br. Bentivolius was 63 years old, a professed friar for 38 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
