Benedict Moroney, OFM
1819 – 1915
Br. Benedict Moroney, OFM, was born in Famahil, Ireland, on May 10, 1819. He was one of the pioneer Allegany, N.Y., Brothers, and lived to be almost a hundred years old.
At the age 42, he began his novitiate in Allegany on Aug. 2, 1861, and professed temporary vows Aug. 2, 1862. His solemn profession took place Aug. 2, 1865.
Br. Benedict lead the rosary for the people on Sunday mornings, worked in the vegetable garden of the friary, and served as a general maintenance man for St. Bonaventure College.
He died in Allegany on May 15, 1915. He was 96 years old and a professed friar for 52 years.
