Benedict Gilmartin

1912 – 1967

Fr. Benedict Gilmartin, OFM, was born Oct. 31, 1912 in Brooklyn, N.Y. After graduating from St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y., he entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1934. He professed temporary vows one year later, made his solemn profession in 1938 and was ordained in 1941.

After his ordination, Fr. Benedict ministered in New York City at St. Francis of Assisi and St. Stephen of Hungary Parishes. He served for six years at St. Joseph Parish, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., before he transferred to St. Bonaventure Friary in 1952. After 15 years there, Fr. Benedict was a confessor for sisters working in hospitals in Jersey City, Hoboken and Newark, N.J.

He died on April 24, 1967 in Paterson. Fr. Benedict was 54 years old, a professed friar for 31 years and a priest for 25 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
