1918 – 1988

Fr. Bede Dauphinee, OFM, was born in Somerville, Mass., on Nov. 6, 1918. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, N.Y., and entered the Province’s novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J., Aug. 12, 1938.

He professed temporary vows Aug. 14, 1939, and made his profession of solemn vows Sept. 17, 1942. Fr. Bede was ordained a priest in Washington, D.C., on June 11, 1944.

Fr. Bede was always interested in art and literature. He obtained his master’s degree in English from St. Bonaventure College in Allegany, N.Y. He was assigned to the Academy of Franciscan History where he served as secretary for a year. In 1946, he went to Siena College, Loudonville, N.Y., to teach and to assist in the library.

In 1950, he returned to the Academy of Franciscan History and became the assistant editor of The Americas and obtained a master’s in Latin American history from Georgetown University. From 1960 to 1965 Fr. Bede edited the Provincial Annals while working on his doctoral dissertation.

He went to St. Bonaventure University in 1965 to teach history. In 1967, he went to the General Curia in Rome to assist in the renewal of the Poor Clares, and he worked in the protocol office until 1974.

In 1975, Fr. Bede was assigned to Hong Kong and in 1977, returned to Holy Name College to serve as procurator. He returned once again in 1979 to Hong Kong for research and to write the history of Holy Name friars in China.

He died July 25, 1988, in St. Theresa’s Hospital in Hong Kong. Fr. Bede was 69 years old, a professed friar for 48 years and a priest for 44 years. He was buried in Hong Kong.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
