Augustine Metz

1865 – 1930

Fr. Augustine Metz, OFM, was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on June 27, 1865. He was received into the friars in Allegany, N.Y., Dec. 21, 1893, and professed temporary vows Dec. 22, 1894. Fr. Augustine made his profession of solemn vows Jan. 6, 1898, and was ordained a priest Dec. 21, 1901.

Fr. Augustine was a member of the first class to be ordained in Holy Name Province. He was an early pastor at Our Lady of the Holy Angels Parish in Little Falls, N.J., and the founder of a parish Long Eddy, N.Y. Fr. Augustine spent the final years of his life as a chaplain in Roslyn, N.Y.

He died in New York City on June 11, 1930. He was two weeks shy of his 65th birthday, a professed friar for 35 years and a priest for 28 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
