Augustine Deveau

1914 – 1971

Fr. Augustine Deveau, OFM, was born in Cambridge, Mass., on Sept. 20, 1914. He entered the Province’s novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary in Paterson, N.J., Aug. 12, 1936, and professed temporary vows Aug. 16, 1937.

Fr. Augustine made his profession of solemn vows Sept. 17, 1940, and was ordained a priest May 28, 1942.

He spent the first three years of his priestly ministry in Mexico, two years at St. Anthony Parish in Asheville, N.C., and two years at St. Anthony Shrine in Boston. Fr. Augustine then went to the University of Texas where he received his master’s degree in Latin American history.

For the next eight years, he served at Bishop Timon High School in Buffalo, N.Y., where he was the vice-principal and guardian of the friary. The last 10 years of his life were spent at St. Francis Chapel in Providence, R.I.

He died June 18, 1971, while recuperating at the home of his sister in Watertown, Mass. He was 56 years old, a professed friar for 33 years and a priest for 29 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
