Fr. Athanasius Hunfeld, OFM, was born on April 12, 1862 in Hede, Germany. He entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1893 and professed temporary vows one year later. He made his solemn profession in 1897 and was ordained in 1903.

Except for brief periods in the East, his priestly ministry was served in Denver, where he was a well-known and well-loved confessor. He died there on Feb. 25, 1940. Fr. Athanasius was 77 years old, a professed friar for 45 years and a priest for 36 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
