Anthony Schneider

1925 – 2009

Fr. Anthony Schneider, OFM, was born Oct. 28, 1925 in Hollis, N.Y. He entered St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y., and was received into the Order at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1946 and given the name Gordon. He professed temporary vows one year later, made his solemn profession in 1950 and was ordained in 1952.

He served as an associate at St. Catherine’s Parish, Clarksville, Va., and St. Francis of Assisi Church, New York City, before being appointed pastor of Our Lady of Angels in La Paz, Bolivia. Fr. Anthony served there from 1956 to 1963 before returning to the United States, where he ministered at St. Joseph Parish, Winsted, Conn., for one year. He returned to Bolivia and went to Puerto Rico in 1966, serving as associate and pastor at Caparra Heights until 1970.

Fr. Anthony briefly returned to the mainland again, serving at the Province’s house of prayer in Lafayette, N.J., and at St. Francis of Assisi Church before he returned to Puerto Rico, serving at St. Rose of Lima Parish from 1973 to 1979. He served as associate and pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Atlanta before returning to Puerto Rico again as pastor at Cristo Rey. From 1985 to 1990, Fr. Anthony served as pastor at San Pablo in Puerto Nuevo.

He retired to Holy Cross Friary, Bronx, N.Y., in 1990 and assisted in the parish until 1997. Fr. Anthony transferred to St. Anthony Friary, St. Petersburg, Fla., where he died April 9, 2009. He was 76 years old, a professed friar for 54 years and a priest for 49 years.
