1911 – 1967

Fr. Andrew Watkins, OFM, was born June 16, 1911 in Wilmington, Del. He attended St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y., and entered the novitiate at St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., in 1931, professing temporary vows one year later. Fr. Andrew made his solemn profession in 1935 and was ordained in 1938.

His first assignment was to St. Francis of Assisi Parish in New York City, where he ministered until he was assigned to St. Clare’s Hospital seven years later. For a quarter of a century, he dedicated his life to the care of the sick — baptisms, anointings and bedside Eucharist. He taught student nurses, reconciled the alienated and blessed marriages.

He died on Jan. 25, 1967 at St. Francis Hospital, Miami Beach, Fla. Fr. Andrew was 55 years old, a professed friar for 34 years and a priest for 28 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
