Br. Albert Rittenmaier, OFM, was born on Nov. 30, 1876 in Messbach, Germany. After four years as a tertiary brother, he was received into the Order in Fulda, Germany, in 1902. He professed temporary vows one year later and made his solemn profession in 1906.

For 25 years, he served in the Fulda Province as bookbinder and sacristan. In 1927, he came to the United States, where he served as sacristan for 16 years at St. Francis Friary, New York City, St. Joseph’s Seraphic Seminary, Callicoon, N.Y., and St. Bonaventure’s College, Allegany, N.Y. Although badly crippled for years, Br. Albert fulfilled his responsibilities cheerfully and faithfully.

He died on March 29, 1943 at St. Francis Hospital, Olean, N.Y. Br. Albert was 66 years old, a professed friar for 39 years.

Each of us should be called a lesser brother, a Friar Minor. Each one of us should wash the feet of the others.”
