ABOUT US

Pax et bonum. Peace and all good.

St. Francis of Assisi used this greeting when he met a stranger on the road or wrote to his brother friars. In the same spirit, we welcome you to our website.

We are the Franciscan friars of Holy Name Province, a branch of the worldwide Roman Catholic fraternity of the Order of Friars Minor that was founded by St. Francis of Assisi in 1223. As friars, we live in the communities to which we minister so that we may better serve our sisters and brothers by experiencing life alongside them.

The Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus is the largest group of Franciscan friars in the United States. Headquartered in New York City, our friars serve primarily in the East Coast with locations in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. There are also friars serving as missionaries in Asia and South America.

Since its founding in 1901, Holy Name Province has been characterized by the wide diversity of its ministries and a talent for innovative service. Today, we continue Francis’s mission to keep the Gospel message alive in our contemporary world.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Holy Name Province is an evangelical and missionary fraternity called to minister in the Eastern United States and abroad.

Rooted in the Catholic and Franciscan tradition, we are disciples of Christ who seek to bring the Gospel into the everyday experiences of all people through Franciscan witness, popular preaching, teaching, and pastoral leadership. We foster Christian discipleship by collaborating with those whom we serve and by standing in solidarity with all people, especially the alienated, the immigrant, and the poor.

We believe that all are welcome.

Though each of our ministries offers a unique set of services created to meet the specific needs of its community, they all have the same chief characteristics in common: friendliness, kindness, compassion and love.

We meet people where they are.

As Franciscan priests and brothers following in the tradition of St. Francis of Assisi, we strive to bring the Gospel message into the everyday experience of all people. We do this through a wide variety of ministries, including parishes, schools and colleges, urban ministry centers, missions, retreat centers, services and shelters for the homeless, hungry, and mentally ill, and “come home” programs for alienated Catholics, among others.

We give a voice to the voiceless.

Thanks to the partners-in-ministry who make our work possible, our ministries empower people to live with dignity and purpose, free of the bonds of poverty and other factors that keep them from realizing their full potential. Through our justice and peace efforts, we stand up for the vulnerable — the poor, the hungry, the marginalized, immigrants and refugees, those who have been rejected by society, and even the Earth itself.

Our message is simple: God loves each of us totally and unconditionally.

Support Our Work

Almost 800 years ago, St. Francis told his brothers that when their own labor was insufficient to support their life and mission, “they should go out, seeking alms with confidence.” In that spirit, the Franciscan friars of Holy Name Province gratefully request donations to support our life and work.
