2012 Events Captured in Provincial Annals

Maria Hayes Around the Province

Historic meetings, milestone anniversaries and bittersweet farewells — a lot can happen in a year. The latest issue of the Provincial Annals, edited by Julian Davies, OFM, of Siena College, Loudonville, N.Y., is filled with significant events and friar recollections from 2012.

Some of the topics included in the 2013 edition are:
•  The first-ever meeting of the leadership teams of the OFM provinces in the United States
•  Anniversary celebrations of two ministries — St. Francis Xavier Parish in Narrowsburg, N.Y., and St. Anthony Shrine in Boston
•  A farewell Mass celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, Providence, R.I.
•  Biographies of the 10 friars who died in 2012

This edition of the Annals also includes an account written by Brian Jordan, OFM, of HNP friars in Bolivia and his experiences during the July 17, 1980 revolution there.

The publication was mailed to friars last month. In addition to Julian’s editorial expertise, the project contains the work of other friars: David Haack, OFM, contributed line drawings, Robert Lentz, OFM, contributed icons, and Vincent Grogan, OFM, and Jud Weiksnar, OFM helped proofread. The publication’s acknowledgements also give credit to Michael Valiquette for “preparing the document for printing.”

Though the Annals has evolved in format and design, the publication has remained true to the purpose Mathias Faust, OFM, described in 1936 when he wrote: “May this publication serve as one more link of zeal and cooperation among the present generation, and as a link of wholesome emulation between the present and the future.”

Each year, Julian requests that photos and news reports for the Provincial Annals be submitted to him by May 1.
